What is a Scientist?
(with a little help from Calvin and Hobbes)
We are going to have a great year exploring our amazing world, and learning to observe and think like scientists.
So what is a Scientist?
A scientist is someone who . . .
OBSERVES (they notice things)

A scientist is someone who . . .
OBSERVES (they notice things)
Do you notice when something looks unusual? Do you notice strange smells or sounds? Do you reach out and touch things that look different? Do you try to see things that are tiny, or far away? Do you like to pick up rocks and shells, or frogs, or weird bugs? If you do, then you like to OBSERVE like a scientist.
A scientist is someone who . . .
WONDERS (they ask questions about what they observe)
A scientist is someone who . . .
WONDERS (they ask questions about what they observe)
Do you ever ask questions, even inside your head, that sound like this: "I wonder why..." or "I wonder what would happen if..." or "I wonder how..."
If you do, then you still have the curiosity that EVERY child is born with. Congratulations! Unfortunately, many people lose that sense of wonder when they grow up. But if you keep your curiosity, YOU can be a scientist!
Finally, a scientist is someone who . . .
INVESTIGATES (they try to find answers to their "wonder" questions)

INVESTIGATES (they try to find answers to their "wonder" questions)
This is the big one. Lots of people observe and wonder. Not many people are determined to find out the answers. The ones who do are called SCIENTISTS. Whether it's your career- or just your attitude- you can be a scientist, too!
A SCIENTIST will do experiments, or make further observations, or look up answers in a book or on the internet. And when they find an answer, it often leads to a whole new observation. . . and new "wonder" questions. . . and new discoveries! To quote Bill Watterson, author of Calvin and Hobbes: "It's a Magical World! . . . There's Treasure Everywhere!"
