Science Club: Frequently Asked Questions
Who can join AMS Science Club?
This club is open to all AMS students (6, 7 and 8). Usually about 2/3 of club members are 6th graders, and the rest 7th and 8th. Each club is limited to approximately 25 students.
What is the cost of joining Science Club?
If students have paid the mandatory school-wide Activity Fee, the only other cost is a materials fee of $15 per student. This fee is to help cover the cost of supplies for our projects. (Most of the projects that students build can be taken home to keep.)
When do the Science Clubs meet?
There is one club on Mondays, and another on Tuesdays. Since they do the same activities each week, it is ok if a student occasionally switches to the opposite day if he/she has a schedule conflict that week. Just make sure to let me know so I can plan my supplies correctly.
How long does each meeting last?
We start right after school in my classroom (Room 200 in the green hallway), and club ends at approximately 4:15. (Occasionally students may finish a project a few minutes early, and can leave if their ride is here; other times they may need to stay a little late to finish a project, or to clean up their space (PLEASE!)
How long does the Club go into the school year?
Fall session begins about a month into the school year, and runs for about 13 weeks, ending in mid-January. In January there is a second sign-up period to choose members for the Spring Science Clubs. Spring Club begins in late January and has approximately the same number of meetings, ending in mid- to late May.
Does the Spring Club repeat the same activities as Fall?
No, the activities are different. Therefore, students are welcome to join both Fall and Spring clubs if they wish. Fall activities are mostly indoor "lab" type activities. In Spring we have more projects related to flight, such as gliders and various types of rockets. Many of these will be done outdoors once the weather warms up.
Can parents come to the club meetings?
YES! I always like to have extra hands in the classroom to help kids with the projects, which can be quite challenging. Even if you want to just come hang out and watch what the kids are doing, you are welcome anytime. Please sign in at the office on your way in.
